Riding On The Wings
Inspiration & History
This song was a collaboration between my friend Chuck and myself. We would get together on occasion, and despite our influences that would seem to be in strong opposition, we often wrote very poppy, Beatles meets A Flock of Seagulls kind of songs. This is one of them, in a marginally complete form.
We worked on this in my apartment, one day. Chuck did the main vocal (and the bass), and I recorded the secondary harmony vocal (and ahs). As I recorded the vocals, both Dawn and Chuck were trying to get me to sing out. This led to our only noise complaint from the management in 3 years in the complex. Figures.
The majority of the song was written by Chuck, and I kind of played the parts he had in his head. This is true for the guitar solo as well. After a few takes of Jake style improvisation, he sung what he thought would make a good solo from the bits I had. Together, we worked to make the solo exactly as it is on the demo. As a matter of fact, it's so much a "part", and not just a random solo, I can (and still) play it note for note as it is here. The very last harmonic is still kind of hard to hit though =^)
The piece was finished on 07/14/00. All in all, the piece came out pretty well. It's a bit of a homage to A Flock of Seagulls, but I guess that's not the worst thing in the world =^)
