Inspiration & History

This is a tune that I wrote right around the time that my back got messed up. Initially it started out as just music. One day I was going through the factory presets of my Yamaha RY-10 drum machine. I also had the "bass" on. One of the presets reminded me of the music from the movie Real Genius, a personal favorite of mine. So variations on both of them kind of inspired the musical portion of this song.

As for the lyrics, when my back was all screwed up, I couldn't walk for a while. Being as I was basically living propped up in a chair, I had plenty of time to think and ponder things to myself. It made me wonder if that was it for me, if my hopes and aspirations were now shot because of my physical condition. Let's just say it didn't do anything for my self-esteem. That was the inspiration behind the lyrics, and the song came together perfectly right around them.

It's one of my more "radio"esque tunes, but eminently hummable and memorable. I am still ok with it to this day, and I feel it's some of the most emotive lyricism I've ever pulled off.

Technical Info

Recording:
Initially I did this as a sort of test to see just how many tracks I could bounce from my 4-track to MiniDisc before it started to sound bad. Well, I forget how many tracks and bounces it was, but I think it was in the neighborhood of 11 or 13 (I know it was more than 10, as afterward that became my official limit). Needless to say, it got weird and wiggy, compressing out in weird ways and such. I managed to make it semi-listenable with some tweaking, but all in all it was a bad mix. This was done on 04/06/00. It was re-recorded a few weeks later in a friend of a friend's home studio on 04/28/00. It was recorded there with a Mackie 24 channel console, into a Tascam 8 Track cassette recorder. Both versions were mixed down to my Sony MDS-JE320 for final mix. Transferred to PC and mixed and finalized with GoldWave.
