Opus pt. 1
Inspiration & History
This is the most recent song on my Demos CD. It was recorded on 01/30/01. This song came about from me playing with Cakewalk (music and midi creation software). I decided to try and make an epic style piece. It is actually an unfinished song, hence the title of pt. 1. I wrote the intro in Cakewalk, and actually just used the line out of my soundcard (an onboard Crystal audio chip on an eMachine......*shudder*) dircetly into the 4 track. You can tell by the sound of the instruments that it is a crappy soundcard, but again, good enough for a demo. I decided that I wanted to add a thunderstorm behind the intro, so I downloaded a sample of one and edited it and matched it up about how I wanted it to fit.
The heavy part of the song kind of just came to be. I think it almost has a Metallica Black Album era feel to it, as if it was a "lost" Metallica riff. Part of it also has a Pantera feel to it as well. I have ideas for where pt. 2 will continue from where this leaves off, but they have yet to be recorded. Let's just say there is plenty more in store for this song.
Side notes: I was trying something different for the heavy guitar tone on this song. It didn't work. I tried using solely my Korg G1 guitar processor direct, double tracked. It came out too....not what I wanted. It has a buzz that I didn't really want. If I mix it with my Mesa, it may even it out. Or I could re-record it with just the Mesa and make it sound good. But I've done none of that. It will probably remain like that. But that's how you learn I guess.
As for the bass, it was also an interesting approach. I used my friend Fern's beloved G&L 4 string. It has an awesome tone. Plus it has a hipshot detuner. So, I set it up to drop to C. Where the heavy part starts, and the end, are me playing the open E string, flipping the hipshot and playing the open E string detuned to C. Good times =^D
