Distant Rains
Inspiration & History
Well, there is not too much to say about this one. One day, while driving home from work, there was a bunch of storm clouds laying low against the Rincon Mountains. The image is clear in my mind to this day. That is the basic inspiration behind the song. It was recorded on 3/4/00.
As far as the actual music itself goes, well, I was going for a combination of a lot of things. I was going for a combination of The Cure and The Fixx with the initial clean guitar. The bass tone was a total Cure Disintegration-ish attempt. I was also trying to get a Fixx-ish feel with the chorus of the song, but going for more Eric Johnson style chord changes. The Eric Johnson vibe kinda carried over the whole piece in my opinion though. The lead solo here, is another interesting anecdote. I was working on a solo for this song, and had gone through quite a few takes. I was trying different techniques, ideas, etc. I can't recallt precisely, but I'm sure I was working for like an hour, more or less. As I did one of the takes, I got to the very end, and on the last note, the string I was holding the last note on, broke, just after I hit it. And it sounded cool. So I ended up having to keep that take. I don't really like what I played, but, I am used to hearing it now. However, I still love hearing that string break =^)
